We had a pretty tough night last night; Jake is sick and isn't breathing well through his nose (so he can't suck his thumb), so his sleep was sporadic, to say the least. We were feeling pretty down & desperate this morning, so we packed up the kids, and headed to Bickford's for breakfast. -why not let someone else take care of us all for a while?

The boys were good, and the Bickford's waitress was SO good to us. (I know we looked truly pathetic) Toby ate a whole "Jr. Jack" breakfast: 2 6-inch buttermilk pancakes, 1 slice bacon, 1 sausage, 1 egg, and a 8 oz glass of milk. Go Toby! Toby was very chipper, and by the end of breakfast we had him singing "I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok. I sleep all night and I work all day!" (We didn't teach him the rest)

Wish us luck tonight. I don't know what we'll do if we have a repeat of last night.

Today, Jake reached for me for the first time. As in, someone was holding him and I said something, he turned and reached both arms to me. Awww. I love that boy. Growing up!

Toby has lost some of our favorite language quirks:

Snissors has turned to scissors.
Shoushers to shoulders
and, sigh,

Hippups has turned to Hiccups.

====================================
In honor of hippups, I shall tell a story. It's really Josh's story to tell, but since he only blogs about games and books I'm going to tell it here.

This was a few months ago when Toby was getting up ridiculously early (as opposed to now when he gets up at 5:45 am) Josh was discussing this with our friend Adam:

Adam: "Do you know why is he getting up so early?"
Josh: "I asked him that the other morning, and he said 'I've got the hippups for going downstairs.' So, I know...And yet I do not know."
====================================

He has developed some new ones:
Whenever something is big he says "big, big GIANT"
and "very" is pronounced "every", as in "Mommy, we have to be every every quiet" gesturing by holding both hands up, palms open, in on either side of his face.
he loves singing "frere DOCTOR" and gets upset if you try to sing it wrong and say Jacques.

====================================

And one more story that I thought I'd written, but I can't find it. A few months back our friends Sarah, Laird, their toddler Audrey, and infant came over for dinner. We usually don't wear shoes in the house, but Audrey was wearing pretty dress shoes so she kept them on.

When she entered the living room, Toby started vociferously pointing out that Audrey had shoes on in the house, and was getting pretty agitated about it. I stopped him and let him know that it was ok, this was an exception to the rule, and it was fine for Audrey to wear shoes in the house. He paused for a few seconds, then looked at me and said "Can I have a cookie?"

He seemed to think if Audrey could get away with that, he had no idea which rules were still in effect.
: )

Kids aren't so good at iffy rules.
